Small-Block Chevy Build - Cheap 350 Phase 2

We put last month's dirt-cheap, parts store 350 back on the dyno with more compression, better heads, and a new cam and kick the grunt up to 420 hpHot Rod recently assembled an economical 0.030-over 350 Chevy based on a Coast Motor stock-replacement-style short-block that made 391 hp when equipped with GM iron Vortec heads, a Comp Cams hydraulic flat-tappet oval-track cam, an Edelbrock Performer RPM high-rise dual-plane intake manifold, affordable Summit Racing 1 5/8-inch primary-tube headers, a GM HEI distributor, and a Holley 750-cfm vacuum-secondary carburetor (see HOT ROD, May '09, "Cheap 350"). The whole package came in at just over $2,600, a real boon in today's tight economy. But 391 hp, although certainly no slouch in the power/dollar department, was still shy of our original 400hp goal. This month, we decided to bring the Cheap 350 back with some alterations in an attempt to blow past the 400hp mark without shelling out cash like a drunken sailor on shore leave. We raised the compression ratio, changed the cam, installed RHS Pro Torker heads, and finally revisited Edelbrock's Super Victor Vortec intake.
