2000 Grand Prix GTP- 2000 Trans Am WS6 M6
GTP is going manual
Since I can't seem to keep the shitty automatic transmissions in the car, I decided to pull the trigger and do the swap. I ended up buying an already assembed "kit" from a guy in Canada. He already had all of the brackets made for the subframe, transmission, pedals, shifter, etc., so this made it easy for me...well, easier.
Here is a comparison of the two transmissions. The automatic is the one on the cart.
The weight comparison is hilarious. My friend was able to lift it himself, while him and another friend lifted it above their heads into the car, so I could bolt it in. Who needs a transmission jack when you have friends, right?
Subframe is out. I supported the engine using a cradle then unbolted the transmission mount, motor mount, steering rack, and control arms. It dropped right out:
Automatic transmission is out:
Triple disk clutch rated at 1000hp. I doubt I'll ever reach that, but peace of mind is nice
Manual transmission bolted up:
Dash is out to swap out the pedals:
Shifter is mounted. Had to break out the welder since the bolt holes were not lining up with my car.
I now need to figure out how to mount the master cylinder and where to drill for the shifter cables to go through to the transmission.
After that is all said and done, it's off to Frost to get tuned for the lack of automatic. He's going to hate me

Hell ya Muncie 282 with intermediate shaft!
You won't be disapointed! Those transaxles are known to hold modded ls and sbc power.
I have a brand new 282 sitting on my bench, just needed an adaptor of converted to a 60* housing.
You work is/was cut out for you but well worth it imho!
Keep us posted I am very interested in this..!
You also now have the f-40 6-spd option as well..
They make a clutch adaptor and Spec will make you a clutch kit if you don't mind running a spec clutch.

Oops my bad it's a Muncie 284!
I missed the primary bolt pattern on yours.. The 284 has 11 bolts, and the 282 has 9..
Congrats on finding the most saught after trans in the w-body/fireo community!Last edited by Smittro; 07-22-2012 at 08:27 AM.

Looks good J! Can't wait to see the car in a few weeks at Spaz's. I'm digging the pic with the two thumbs up.

2000 Grand Prix GTP- 2000 Trans Am WS6 M6
I was thinking about it, but the 284 was already part of a kit. This way I don't have to fabricate things like the clutch pedal, trans/engine mounts, shifter, etc. Everything is basically bolt-in for me.
Look in my third pic, the seller gave me his spare 284, just in-case I need it
Hoping to have it done by then. Just a few more things to work out before I see Frost in a week and a half and Spaz's in two weeks. The thumbs up are my buddy Andre. He was a big help yesterday.
Another pic you'll appreciate, Jeff. All three of my vehicles in one place:

Damit! 2!?! I missed the second one..lol
I'm using the 06 G6 3900 GTP shifter, cables, and master..
I'm lucky as the gen1 W also came in Muncie 5spd so I already have the provision for the clutch peddle and the hole in the fire wall was/is grometed closed (factory) for the clutch rod.
I have to fab motor/trany mounts though and that's not the most fun..lolLast edited by Smittro; 07-22-2012 at 12:42 PM.

That's a good size shop! You definitely need some more toys to fill that place.

Got a lot done today...clutch pedal in, master cylinder mounted, shifter cables drilled through firewall and attached to transmission, and then all of the interior put back together.
'
Ignore the wires on the floor. I have some gauge wiring to do...removing the trans temp gauge since I don't need it anymore, and moving my vac/boost gauge up to my pillar pod.

Looks like a lot going on with this swap -- you did a whole bunch of work in not a lot of time. You ever sleep? How about a clutch pedal switch with the change over?

Switch installed on the pedal to make sure that the engine will not start with the transmission in gear unless the pedal is depressed.

Just a thought. It'd be easy to install one if you ever have to in the future.
