Rear End Leaking
Hi guys, I got a rear end leak we think it is the pinion seal. Would it be oh k to just remove the yoke and put the new seal in? then just replace the the same yoke in after the job is done? Are there any considerations with regards to the pinion crush sleeve? What is the torque for the yoke Nut? I have read the Faq on the rear end. So any other info would be great. Thanks.

With a hammer and chisel, mark the nut, pinion shaft and yoke in one line. That way everything will go back exactly where it was and you'll have the proper torque on the pinion bearings and crush sleeve. That being said I like to tighten the nut slightly past the lines I marked.
The yoke should be reusable as long as its not scored. When in doubt, replace it.
I also like to smear some silicone sealer along the outside of the metal shell of the seal and smear some thread sealer on the pinion splines.
And after all of that its almost guaranteed to leak again with in 500 miles...

Oh wow thanks a bunch , I will try that on Friday. Are you serious that not matter what you do the pinion seal will just start leaking again? that is pretty shotty engineering...

My memory sucks if you can even reuse the same crush sleeve I thought you can't go past 15lb (or is it ") I do know if you over tighten the crush sleeve you put in more play and you have to put a new one in.

Technically you can't reuse a crush sleeve. In the real world, the method I described is the only economical solution and will work just fine. If you overtighten it then its gotta be replace. You can't just back the nut off if you overtighten it.

So if the crush sleeve is oh k and not in that bad of shape you can reuse it? When is it time to replace a crush sleeve? Also anyone know why my rear end would hop if i hit the gas half way in second gear? it is like when the car breaks loose in second it has really bad tire bounce.. Or whatever it is called.. Sorry for changing subjects.

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
Does it fell like it's shaking the drivers seat?
It's called "wheel hop" and it may be due to your pinion angle. If your car is lowered you'll want to instal LCA relocation brackets, which compensate for pinion angle after lowering.
WHEEL HOP is the single most destructive thing a rearend can experience!
In any caes you might want to invest in a body mount adjustabe torque arm. This will allow you to adjust the pinion angle and (on better units) will have a drive shaft saftey loop.

Well it does not really feel like it is shaking the drivers seat.. Yeah Wheel hop.. I was tired last night sorry for the miss communication. So I should just be able to get a kit? It just makes noise when I hit the gas hard in second gear. And then if i keep on it hard in third a little bit.. I wont be doing that anymore till I get it fixed. Thanks for the post though I will totally look into it.

Sorry for the double post.. But I finished the rear end, it all worked out nicely I will take it out tomorrow on the road, And see how everything feels. Just gotta wait and hope the leak stays away I guess haha. It would seem my plates in my axles are gone.. also we found out haha. Seems like I am gonna have to fix those soon too. Any advice on that one? The plates I am talking about are the ones for the Posi.. We had it up and in gear and we could stop one wheel easily.. and the other one would just spin twice as fast... if that makes sense to anyone.
