the problem I ran into was that every pack of resistors i checked with my meter were all off, they were within the 5%tolerance, but too far off to use for vats bypass. So I get to go get the expensive ass 1% ones I suppose

You may have to do like a lot of people ( myself included) and solder a couple in a series to get your ohms where you want them.

yea, but I am still gonna have to meter the whole setup till it is right.

They actually had the right resistor in stock, but in a 5% tolerance there was too much play in the QC. I am gonna go meter every one they have to see f any are closer

Sandman, thank you for the incredibly clear and detailed guide. My car suffered from the 'flashing security light' syndrome this weekend, at a hotel garage. It was there for a few days, my last resort was to tow to the stealership. I posted on the forum, got great advice and your guide saved the day:

Thank you very much, really appreciate the effort you put into creating this guide!!

If you do a good job (e.g. soder things), it will last forever. Even if you just plug it in and tape it, it will still last for a very long time.

so once you find the resistence on the key theres resisters with that same tolerence?I do have some xtra resisters laying around they are 5% Tolerence is that to much?

5% resistors will work fine. It may take more than 1 resistor depending on what you pellet is. If you solder everthing it should last as long as the car does. It's all behind the dash so it's out of plain sight. What I did was cut the wires on the igntion side of the connector and then soldered my resistors between those wires and plugged it back in. Effectively I just made a pigtail.

I dont know anything about electrical.
So can you guys help me find out what setting I use to find out what my key reads? I guessing you have to match up a resistor with what your key reads right?

Not sure how to decode. What do you have the multimeter set to? Did you take the reading three times on different settings? A picture of your multimeter would help.

There are 15 different possible resistance values for the key pallets:

look like you have Key #14 so you need a appox. a 9530 ohm resistor or 9.5K ohm resistor (same thing).

Me and a friend went to radioshack and found 3 resistors just fine and put it all togather no problems then or sence. Some times I forget I ever did it you would never know.....unless you stole the car.

Yeah its such a great fix that we do it at the dealership all the time and have been for years. We tell the customers what the car needs to fix it and then tell them about the bypass and 90% choose the bypass. And some want ign cylinder replaced to maintain the factory system operation.

do you know if an aftermarket alarm system with a remote start will over ride the factory VATS? My car won't start and now the alarm goes off when i try to start it and the security light stays on. even with they key in the ignition the alarm won't stop. just runs itself for about 90 seconds or so.
