Next Project - 1970 Oldsmobile W-31

Just shipped the intake manifold and a pile of miscellaneous parts to the builder. I've been refurbishing and painting the parts a little bit at a time in the evenings. We should be heading up to dyno the engine sometime in the next month or so.

are you gonna chassis dyno when you get it all done?

that looks like a quadrajet intake. is that what your going to use or are you going to go with a holley?

We do not have a chassis dyno anywhere in our area. Next best thing will be some track times and putting the car on the scales.

Stock W-31 Q-jet.

yea you need another garage with a chassis dyno, that could be weekend income....

My brother and I blasted and powdercoated all the suspension pieces.

Working on the valve covers now and then moving on to the distributor and carburetor. As suggested by another member in the Train, I used oven cleaner on the valve cover baffles. It worked great -- I was amazed at all the "black snot" that slowly oozed out from behind the baffles. This was done after bathing them in brake cleaner and lacquer thinner. I'm going to run one more can of oven cleaner through them tonight just to be safe before prepping them for paint.

ez off oven cleaner is the shit...my dad uses it to clean engine compartments before paint.....

Probably have a good 8 hours into restoring the valve covers. Lots of scrubbing, 3 cans of brake cleaner, 2 cans of oven cleaner, knocked the paint and rusty stuff down with a Dryloc on my angle grinder, tapped out some small dings, filled a few others and skim coated the rustiest areas to smooth them before sanding everything down with 400 dry. I made a cardboard cover slightly smaller than the head mating surface in order to paint the underside lip of the cover to prevent rust. The dimples in the final pic are the spot welds for the baffle.

The builder sent some pics today of the engine. Best recollection: .030" over, roller cam, CP pistons, and the crank is cut for Chevy rods and offset ground for a 375 c.i. displacement. I am working on the distributor and carburetor now and will get them shipped up as soon as they are done.
