    Transmission Rebuild Tools

I have never delved into the black magic realm of an automatic transmission rebuild. I think it is time I made an attempt at this and may start with the 200R-4 in our Monte Carlo SS. Right now, it's mission is to get into high gear as fast as it possibly can and this is really not helping the 180 horses that move our car.

If I were to take the plunge, what sort of tools do I need to tear into one of these things? I know that a rebuild manual is an absolute and in addition to the factory book will be sure to pick something else up that covers performance modifications. I already have circlip pliers, seal drivers, and such. What else should I be looking for?

I always wanted to build a 2004R for my '88 Cutlass Supreme Classic, but never did. I did all the research on what I wanted but never took the plunge.
To a certain extent you can get around buying some of the special tools by using different techniques, using common tools, or by making some tools very inexpensively. I can't remember any specifics to the 2004R, but a good aftermarket rebuild manual will show the tools and/or alternative methods

^^ Thanks. I always page through the book before I tackle a new job. I am really not well versed in how an auto trans works or what all the components are. They actually kind of scare me, which is funny as I am not one to hesitate on ripping into anything mechanical.

I like using this site, which explains more technical things pretty easily.

    http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automa...ansmission.htm

It's several pages and covers the basics.

First of all, he asked for tools so I already provided that info and then some. Anyone who thinks they are going to get everything they need to know on how to rebuild an auto transmission from the internet should give up now.. I'm pretty sure he knows this..... Hense the thread title ("transmission rebuild tools") and why he mentioned the books/manuals ... I've got 20 years in the game and alot of interaction/communication with Jeff through this site. I'm pretty sure he understands what's going on.. Good day...

Thanks for the info guys. I usually do a lot of reading and question asking before I tackle something new.

Wowza. Somewhere that took a dive. Just thought I would post that as I had saw it earlier, never hurts to have additional reading material.

    Everything is OK
