obviously this wasnt for my camaro, but i painted the rims on my DD camry and i think they came out pretty good. i think i spent about $30 on the paint and about another $30on the wire brushes for my grinder and drill. its been about 2 months and they still look like new.

^^Oh, and I think he charges like $70 a wheel now. Can't beat that, and depending on the wheel composition and color, the hand prep is included and his turn-around is SUPER quick.

Good to know. I think I want polished/chrome craigers. But, not absolutely sure. So, that's not gonna happen for a little while. I think getting these powder coated is a happy medium until I decide on new wheels.
Plus, I think with the Manta stripe kit it would look good

^^Thanks!
OP: ...sorry.
The only reason I didn't do the decal is because I wanted the whole thing black (inside the scoop as well as outer part)....and I didn't want a pinstripe.

If your going to paint them yourself just make sure you buy an adhesive spray. That bascially takes the prep work out. I did a set fr a friend, didnt prep any, all I did was clean the rims REAL good. then I sprayed the metal adhesive spray then paint and clear. Looked good and still do.

I sodablasted my aluminum wheels then prep solved, and sprayed them with high temp engine paint & clear. So far so good no chipping/flaking etc. It's all in how you prep before paint.

Ok I decided to jsut type this up in here for all to see.
Like said in post before, paint life will all be determinded in the prep work. If you have never painted anything before this might not be for you. Wheels have to deal with elements and brake dust year around so if you rush the process you might end up with a crappy finish in just a few months.
If you are doing this on a daily driver you'll need another set of wheels and tires to drive on for the weekend or how ever long you decide to drag this out. I painted mine on a friday night and by saturday after noon they were able to be mounted.
I DID NOT DISMOUNT MY TIRES, HOWEVER, IF YOU CAN IT WILL SAVE ALITTLE TIME......alittle.
So, after you dismount the wheels they need to be cleaned with some soap and water. After they look like NEW you can start the first step.
The Paint on the wheels has a smooth finished and it needs to be scuffed so the paint you apply will have something to stick to. To do this you will need a 3M Scotch-Brite pad. Red or the more common green, both will do the job. The area between the spokes will be painted black so those are the area's that will need to be worked. You will need to scrub these area's with this pad untill the paint does not have any shine or luster to it.
everywhere you see black on this wheel will need to be scuffed....

Again, you are trying to scuff the paint, not remove it. It takes some pressure, but does not take long. After the inside of the spokes are finished wheel must be cleaned again. this time making sure you get every bit of dust and dirt off the wheels, inside the barrel and on the face.
REMOVE CENTER CAPS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Then... DRY DRY DRY
Now to the flip side. Taping.....
Taping is where you have to be very detailed. The spokes are not very wide and if any lines are not straight on the taping you will see it when they are mounted.
back to example # 1
You will need the 3/4 inch tape for the spoke and the small areas, also the 2" tape for the less detailed area's like the lip and backing.
Where there is silver there shall be tape....GOOD tape.....3M blue painters tape!!!!!!! You do not want some BS great value tape bleeding through on the edges and causing you a head ache and eye sore.
When taping, tear off a strip (using the wheel as measurement) the length of the spoke.Last edited by NeedsaZ06; 10-24-2009 at 04:47 PM.
