The Macallan is a fine single malt choice in scotch no matter which you choose.

At over $800 a bottle, I cannot vouch for the 30 year old, but have enjoyed the 18 year old sherry oak. At less than $200 a bottle, it's a bit more affordable as well.

If I were your uncle, I'd love you even if you got me a $50 12 year Macallan!

    256 years old? seriously?

but it comes down to how much he likes it, and drinks it....whiskey/scotch that is. i drink my fair share of whiskey, but not so much on the scotch. I bought a bottle of Johnny Walker red, it think its an 8 year old blended malt. then a drinking buddy convinced me to buy Johnny Walker Green, its a 15 year old single malt. and i couldn't really tell the difference.

Over 12 years the oak flavor tends to drown everything else out, but, hey thats what some people like.

regardless i think its a badass gift.

Johnnie Walker does not make a single malt scotch. All thier whiskey is blended from up to 27 different distillers.
The green lable is a blend of single malts.

well yeah, but the malts are blended before they age, so its 1 malt into 1 barrel, and i think that goes into 1 bottle, no more blending. on the bottle it says its a "pure malt", but you get the point.

Green is a vatted whiskey, heres the Wiki definition - "A vatted malt is a blend of different single malt whiskies from different distilleries. Vatted malts do not contain any grain whisky, unlike products labelled as "blended whisky."

I have never tasted a single malt Scotch that was bad. Some are better than others but typically the older the better, to a point. I say that because anything over 25 years it becomes critically important how it was stored. IMO single malt Scotch is the best whiskey you can buy. American whiskey's are good and I also enjoy them but I think the law that limits the use of the barrel to one time and it must be thrown out, or sold, ruins the opportunity for some very unique tastes. Scotch is usually aged in barrels from the US. They don't have a one time use law. Scotch blends can be interesting but they are a crapshoot. There are great ones and there are bad ones. It depends greatly on the year and what Scotches are used in the blend. There are a few websites that are dedicated to whiskey so a search would help you find out if what you intend to buy is really worth the cost. I have had a 40 dollar a shot Scotch that tasted better that a 400 dollar a shot Scotch.
