9.5" wheel width on a 315 tire

they say 10.5-12.0... yes they are narrower, but most tires will require 11-13
basic math still says that 9.5 < 10.5 and already below the lower limit for PROPERLY mounted tire... you should get 16.5" wheels and install them on 17s... lol

of course they will say that, they are just covering their own ass. i got mine mounted up and i couldn't be happier, they look great and work great too

eh, ive had no issues with my Nitto 555r' 315/35/17 on my 9.5" rims...

yes i know 'not recommended', but when i bought the SS those tires came on the car. hell when i bought an aftermarket pair for the rears (9.5" rim) i created a thread about it. everyone knows that Nitto's run narrower than other brand(s) 315's that do show the excessive sidewall bulge...

I run 275/50/15 Mickey Thompson ET Drag Radials on a 15x10" rim. Mickey Thompson's website says the "approved rim sizes" for that tire are 7.5-9.5" wide.

Am I, along with a jillion other F body owners, UNSAFE doing this?

From this 3/4 view, you can clearly see that a 275 tire on a 10" rim fits perfectly IMHO...



Now here's the same exact tire brand and size on a 15x8" wide rim, which is in the manufacturer's approved rim size list, and it clearly, VERY clearly, bulges...probably moreso than any Nitto 315/35/17 would ever bulge on any 17x9 or 17x9.5" rim...Definitely moreso than any NITTO pic shown yet. Nitto claims that their tires are the same physical size as BFG's and Mickey Thompsons, yet they aren't even close...A Nitto 275/50/15 would fit an 8" rim, like my MT's fit my 10" rims...



Moral of the story...

Manufacturer's approved rim sizes and/or recommendations aren't always 100% accurate...

I'm getting some Centerline Warrior's, sized 15x8.5" this weekend. I'll be mounting my extra MT ET Drag Radials on them. Now, MT's website says 8.5" rims are right in the center of their "approved sizes", and I'll bet it's nowhere near as nice of a fit as they are on a 10" wheel...If I remember, I will snap some pics and post them before the end of the weekend.

Yeah that rear tire on the bottom pic looks VERY unsafe. I wouldn't feel good riding on those tires.

That's what I am saying. That wheel isn't even totally at the small end of the approved manufacturer's scale, yet the tire is bulged out quite noticeably.

also note that depending on the tire construction and sidewall, it dictates different tolerances too.

Hey since we`er talk`n tires I was looking a a set of HP Evo rims like around 19x9.5 I was wondering about some tire`s I`am thinking BFG 275/35 `s on the front and 285`s on the rear but will 295`s work on that rim size too ?

the bigger the rim, the lower the tolerance in terms of width variance... ie, you'll have more tolerance on a 17x9 vs 19x9 in terms of possible width variance. I think a 295/30-19 will be tough to mount on a 19x9.5.. tire shop will hate you.... lol

friday afternoon I couldn't find ay shops to swap my tires. I used 2 picture frame clamps to pop the old ones off the bead, then took bout 2 hours and 3 pry bars to swap the old ones off and new ones on...275/35/18's on 9.5" rims are a bitch to change by hand

Thanks Eugenio SS So I guess I`ll settle for 285`s for the rear , but hypethetically speaking could you cut those wheels and add an inch , then mount a larger tire ?
Have people done this & how much would that cost ? I mean it would be a shame to cut up new rims but maybe later down the road ?

depending on the wheel you get, lots of times it's cheaper to buy bigger wheels than you have your wheels widened... there is a place a few doors down from where i work that repairs, repaints and will widen wheels (transwheel) lots of times it's over a hundred just to fix a little curb rash and refinish.

i have nitto Dr's 555r 315/35/17 On my 9.5 ws6 rims Looks really good i love them. i havent had any issues with them. hooks great also..
