Fill the oil filter: fact or myth?

why you do that? in those 5 secons there shouldnt be any damage at all makes no sence

the oil has two jobs is to lubricate and cool the engine. but when you do an oil change the engine is generaly cold or cooling. .

ive worked on diesels before and its not engine threatning to fill up the filters. however the diesel filters do requre a filling or else the truck wont start. you would have to manually pump diesel into the Injectors

Its a myth.

It might have less oil circulating for a moment but its not an overly long period of time. Plus everything inside the engine is already covered in a thin layer of oil.

its not a myth, you a have a cummins and dont fill it? that is a good way to make your turbo go south on ya.

did you not know that the MOST engine wear is at start up??? after all the oil is drained down into the pan again. that thin film is not the best to lubricate moving metal.

also why do you change your oil cold?? big mistake

Ive always done it on all our vehicles, i also get a little on my finger and put it on the rubber gasket to prevent cracking etc.

I never change the oil while the engine is cold. I always at least run the engine for a few minutes, get things warm so the oil circulates and all the impurities, moisture etc... are actually in the oil when the drain plug is pulled.
This way you make sure when you drain the oil it's actually pulling out this stuff, the whole reason you change the oil in the first place, right?

I honestly never thought about it before. Sounds like a good idea. i do pour a quart of cheap stuff through while draining. You'd be amazed at the last little bit that hides behind.

of course....fill it,....cant believe that anyone wouldnt....duh...hell i even fill my DD oil filter and its mouned on an angle, so dont tell me it cant be done, no spills either

Ya my truck is the same way, its annoying, its already hard to get to let alone being on its side

I actually can't fill it, even if I wanted to on my DD. It's a Cadillac Catera. Canister filter type; only the cap and filter come out. On a side note, the cadillac is a pain in the ass to work on; everything has a special tool. Hell, even the oil drain bolt requires a torx bit. I mean, come on, WHY!!!???

Time is money, most shops don't fill the filter. I'd NEVER take my car to a garage, they overlook to many things.

They dont use torque specs in shops...time is money . commission.. hence a lot of comebacks..

whoops my bad, i should of said warmed, I never new about that it was bad to change the engine cold, but thanks,

with todays modern oil the Startup damage is slightly reduced, has anyone tried lucas?

Ive always drive the car at least 10 miles and let everything get up to op. temp.. Then after slightly cooling I drain the oil and run new crap oil(about a quart) to get the rest of the gunk out..till it pours clear...
