It is true that you should stay away from synthetics in most auto trannies. Auto transmissions work largely on the principal of fluid friction. Synthetic fluids are designed to reduce friction, so in a clutch type rear axle the same thing would apply, although many people run synthetic gear oils in their clutch type rear axles with no problems. As for an engine, you can switch to synthetic at any time, you wont hurt anything. The main possible downside is that synthetic fluids will clean out any deposits in the motor... deposits which may have been sealing up oil leaks... so the possibility exists to develope leaks.
