O.K., I just ran into the same problem after installing new cylinder heads.

I had a large amount of air trapped in the system and it would not bleed out. I ran the car for about 45 minutes off and on. I would let it cool off and then start it again.

Finally I got the idea to jack up on the left rear side of the car so that the air could escape. As soon as I did this the air bled out and the temp dropped instantly.

    Give it a try.

I highly doubt that the waterpump is bad... this would be the last thing that I try. Waterpumps are very simple parts. When they fail, they leak.

really?? Never would have thought of that I'll give it a try and see what happens! did your heater work when it was getting hot? why the left rear side of the car?

No, the heater did not work.

Because of the design of the system, air gets trapped in the highest places so leveling off such things as the upper radiator hose can solve this.

Throwing a jack under the car takes 10 minutes vs. 2 hours yanking the pump

I tried jacking up the drivers side rear and the passenger rear... didn't help. I flushed the heater core with both hoses off and with one hose off to back feed the radiator until it over flowed... didn't help still no heater and the car is getting very hot. what else other than a bad waterpump could it be? oreillys told me that 40-50% off the time the reman water pumps come back bad. which leads me to think maybe the it is the waterpump. any more help would be greatly appreciated.

could the optispark be installed incorrectly? it doesn't miss and starts up fine. I don't see how the heat wouldn't work but it's just a thought.

will the car overheat when youre drivin? did you check to make sure both fans were workin? dont flush anymore. that's not the problem and you might create the air pocket problem. when you yanked your thermo---did you have fan on from idle til it overheated? this is important.
