Just FYI:Gm put out a TSB in 2000 saying that overheating may be caused by poor seal at radiator cap.Fix was to polish radiator neck with 400 grit sandpaper and a block of wood! So that first mechanic may have fixed an early problem.
Pull your oil dipstick ASAP and tell us what the oil looks like.

Navy Blue- ls1 trans am
I did an oil change a few weeks ago and did not notice anything unusual about the oil. I checked it yesterday and it looks really good, like brand new oil. Also I only drive only 10mi. round trip to work and back. I never let the engine over heat. The second the guage would begin to go up I would kill the car and pull over. I think the dexcool is just getting old and needs to be flushed out. I'm hesitating taking it to a dealer b/c I know from past experiences, as well as others, that they will tell you something is wrong even if it isn't. But if you guys think that is it I will take it to them for a diagnosis. I dont think I would attempt to do a head gasket by myself but the dealership is asking 1500-2000 just for labor.

If the oil looks good then your head gasket is prolly fine. Didnt you say the water pump was leaking?? Get a new water pump and flush the Dexcool and you will be golden.
